Pearl in the Wreckage
Jan & Ilse 1994

Jan Allain and Ilse de Ziah have at last released their debut album. It kicks off with the title track, Pearl in the Wreckage, which is a glorious haunting paean about Ireland. The lyrics are quite beautiful and, like so many good songs,open to individual interpretation. Jan has a beautiful voice and this well recorded album demonstrates her vocal strength and formidable range to good effect. The album shows the diversity of Jan's songwriting-intriguing and sometimes hilarious lyrics riding high on classy melodies. This is a quality product worthy of wider distribution.

Pearl in the Wreckage.

The debut album 'Pearl in the Wreckage' by Jan and Ilse comes across as strangely old-fashioned.Guitar, cello, harmonica and vocals spiced with mandolin and violins..this album cannot be descibed as ordinary or familiar.
Influenced by folk and country, in the tradition of grand songwriters from Joni Mitchell to Tracy Chapman, Jan and Ilse cross musical borders with great ease.Their music picks up Latin American rhythmns, dives through elements of swing, chanson and chamber music arriving somewhere beautifully original.
Undoubtedly anchored in the melodic tradition,these musicians create their own unique sound which is fresh and powerful giving excellent lyrics and a fine voice plenty of space to unfold.
Jan's perspective on life is powerfully and essentially woman-centered. her lyrics however transcend feminism.They are charged with poetical artistry and humour in a way that true songsmiths can boast. An uplifting and deeply moving recording.

'Wir lieben es aufzutreten, zu singen, zu feiern, daß wir Frauen und Lesben sind.Wir sind glücklich, wenn das Publikum es genießt, mit uns Spaß zu haben.' So lautet das Credo von Jan Allain aus London und Ilse de Ziah aus Sydney, die seit 1991 zusammen in Sachen Musik unterwegs sind und mit diesem Album bereits ihr drittes vorlegen, das zwar schon vor einem halben Jahr veröffentlicht wurde, aber hierzulande noch keinen größeren Vertrieb finden konnte. Life is Pink
Jan & Ilse 1996

Das Leben kann so grau und trist sein, daß es aber eigentlich pink und voller Tempo ist, stellen Jan Allain (Voc., Git.) und Ilse de Ziah (Cello, Fiddle, Voc.) (..) unter Beweis. (..) Bei allen Songs geht es ab, sehr gitarrenbetont und oft durch den groovigen Baß und Schlagzeug unterstützt - wobei Ilse de Ziahs Cello nicht vergessen werden darf. Die Songs sind gut arrangiert, oft countrymäßig angehaucht, was durch die Fiddle von Ilse de Ziah noch unterstrichen wird. Mitsingen ist jedenfalls kein Szene-Geheimtip mehr, bei ihren Live-Auftritten verstehen sie es, das Publikum  restlos zu Begeisterungsstürmen hinzureißen, und da ist die CD genau richtig, um Wolken zu vertreiben und nicht alles immer so tierisch ernst zu sehen. Oder, wie Jan und Ilse selber in ihrer Widmung schreiben: 'Blue Skies! Life is Pink!'
